Michael Fischer, MD, MSPH
Dr. Fischer is nephrology section chief at Jesse Brown VA Medical Center and a research health scientist at CINCCH. He is also a professor of Medicine in the Section of Nephrology at the University of Illinois Hospital and Health Sciences System. He completed both his fellowship in Nephrology and his Master of Science in Public Health at the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center. He is a graduate of the Indiana University School of Medicine and he completed his residency in Internal Medicine at Washington University and Barnes-Jewish Hospital in St. Louis, Missouri.
Dr. Fischer completed a Career Development Award by the Department of Veterans Affairs, Health Services Research and Development Service, entitled, The Role of Chronic Kidney Disease in an Elderly High-Risk Population. In addition to VA funding, he is a funded co-investigator for the Hispanic Chronic Renal Insufficiency Cohort (CRIC) Study. He is also the principle investigator of the University of Illinois at Chicago Hemodialysis Opioid Prescription Effort (HOPE) Clinical Center, which is part of an eight center NIH clinical trial national consortium evaluating non-pharmacologic and pharmacologic strategies to reduce pain and opioid use in adults on maintenance hemodialysis. His research foci include health economics, depression, quality of life, and health disparities in Veterans and non-Veterans with CKD and ESKD, especially as it pertains to geriatric populations.
